Adult Services - Dental Services - AdultsOur service helps people who may struggle to access general dental treatment, get the dental care they need.
Adults may struggle to access general dental services due to:
- Learning disabilities
- Physical disabilities
- Severe mental health problems
- Complex medical considerations
- Social vulnerability
- Older age
These factors can affect:
- Ability to receive treatment
- Communication of pain or discomfort
- Decision- making about dental care
- Providing informed consent.
Our service provides specialist skills, training and equipment to help overcome these barriers. For example, we use mobility aids, dental sedation, general access services and offer home visiting options.
For information about our specialist dental services for children please visit the website.

How do I access this service?
- We accept referrals from dentists, GPs, and other health care workers.
- Patients can also self-refer if they meet our criteria.
We are a referral-only service. This means you must be referred before we can see you. We give dental care to people who cannot go to a normal high street dentist.
Examples include:
- People with a physical disability
- People with a learning disability
- Children whose treatment has not worked at a normal dentist
- Children in care
- People with diagnosed mental health conditions (access depends on the condition)
Important information
- We cannot accept patients just because they cannot register with a normal dentist.
- We look at each referral and if the patient meets our criteria, we can give care.
- We know it can be hard to find an NHS dentist, but we can only see patients who meet our referral criteria.
- If you cannot find a dentist, call NHS England's Customer Contact Centre on 0300 311 2233 or NHS 111 for urgent care. You can also call local dentists. A list is on the NHS website.
