Adult Services - Dental Services - AdultsSpecial Care Dentistry focusses on improving access for adults who find it difficult to receive dental treatment in a general dental service. Patients may find access difficult because of:
- Learning disabilities
- Physical disabilities
- Severe mental health problems
- Complex medical considerations
- Social vulnerability
- Older age
These reasons can impact the ability to receive treatment, communicate pain and make decisions about the dental care that may be best for you. It could also impact on your ability to consent to that dental care.
Our service provides specialist skills, training and equipment to help overcome these barriers. For example we use mobility aids, dental sedation, general access services and offer home visiting options.
Exemptions from NHS dental treatment costs may apply for people who receive certain benefits.

How do I register for this service?
We accept referrals from dentists, GPs, and other health care workers. Patients can also self-refer if they meet service criteria.
We are a referral only service that provides dental care for patients that are unable to access care at a high street dentist. Examples of this would include: a physical or learning disability, children where treatment has failed in general practice, looked after children and some diagnosed mental health conditions.
Unfortunately, our service access policy does not extend to accepting patients based on them being unable to register with a General Dental Practitioner. We can assess individual referrals and if the patient meets our criteria, then we can accept them for care.
Whilst we appreciate that finding an NHS dentist can be challenging, we can only see patients who meet our referral criteria.
Further details about our services can be found on our website pages for Specialist Dental Services - Adults and Children.
Alternatively, we would suggest that you telephone local dentists, you can find local dentist on this NHS website page.
If you have problems finding a dentist, please contact NHS England's Customer Contact Centre on 0300 311 2233 or NHS 111 for urgent care.
Dentists can refer by visiting the Dental Referrals website page.
Patient referrals from other health care experts or self-referrals can be referred to using the referral form in the section under 'Useful resources and links'.
Please send completed referrals to Providerdental.northants@nhft.nhs.uk
Please note this inbox is not checked daily - If you require an immediate response, please call your nearest clinic directly. The contact details can be found in the section 'Available Locations'.
