Type
Adult Inpatients AcuteInpatient care allows us to closely monitor our patients and ensure that they are receiving everything they need for their mental and physical wellbeing.
The Sandpiper Ward is a 16 bedded all female Admission and Recovery Ward. They may take transfers from Kingfisher Ward or Shearwater PICU.
Sandpiper ward staff complete a 72 hour assessment of the service user. During this time staff will attempt to engage the service user in discussions about their care and assessments. Co-producing care is central to the service user’s recovery journey. The occupational therapy service will actively engage with all service users in a group format and an individual format. This is dependent on the individual’s recovery needs.
Following the 72 hour assessment a decision will be made about how to best support the service user on their recovery journey. This could be by discharging the service user back to the care of their GP, being discharged with Urgent Care Assessment Team (UCAT) support or discharged with Planned Care and Recovery Team (PCART) and UCAT support or transfer to Kingfisher Ward.
A service user may be referred for short term inpatient psychology or for a psychological assessment whilst on Sandpiper Ward. The ward also has links with the short-term team. They may complete a referral for the patient if they have issues such as accommodation or benefit issues.
The focus of Sandpiper Ward is to work in a co-produced way so that the service user is actively involved in their care and care planning towards discharge. Regular assessments will be made of the service users mental state and risk levels.

Smoking and vaping information
We know that quitting smoking reduces your chances of heart disease and lung cancer as well as improves your sense of taste, makes your skin look younger and reduces stress. That is why we are proud to be smokefree.
Remember smoking is not allowed anywhere, on any NHFT sites.
If you are an inpatient, please speak to your ward matron about smoking and vaping options. We also offer nicotine replacement therapy.
All other users (whether service user, visitors or staff) must go offsite if they wish to smoke.
