Community Paediatricians are paediatric trained, child health doctors, trained in both hospital and community settings. They have experience of working with families and as part of a team to assess children and co-ordinate services for those with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and other special needs.

Community Paediatrics

Community Paediatricians are paediatric-trained child health doctors who are trained in both hospital and community settings. They have experience of working with children and their families with a range of conditions and needs.

For attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessment in school-age children, our doctors work with the NHFT ADHD and ASD service.

The doctors work with parents and other professionals to make a full assessment of the child's needs.

Appointments are mostly provided in clinics or by phone.

Who is this service for? We see children between the ages of 0 and 18 years old.

The service supports with the following:

  • Medical assessments of children with delayed or unusual patterns of development including concerns about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in primary school aged children or autism spectrum disorder in pre-school and primary school-aged children.
  • Assessment of new or ongoing concerns and helping to co-ordinate services for children with disabilities and complex needs, including supporting those nearing the age of 18 with the move to adult services
  • Ongoing care and medical reviews of children who have specific identified conditions or syndromes that need monitoring
  • Assessment and advice for health problems affecting education and school progress (including writing) and medical advice for Education and Health Care Plans
  • Referrals to therapists, specialists and services in the education and voluntary sector
  • Information on national and local support groups

Waiting times

There are a large number of children and young people waiting for this service. Unfortunately, this means that waiting times are longer than we would like. We know waiting can be difficult and we are sorry that it will take longer to be seen than you might have expected.

The current average waiting time for a first appointment with this service is 82 weeks (updated June 2026). This means that, for most people being referred into the service now, it usually takes around 82 weeks before they are seen for the first time. However, some people may wait longer than this as everyone's needs and circumstances are different.

We are actively working on reducing our waiting lists and waiting times are improving.

If you have been referred to the Community Paediatrics service, we understand that this must be a difficult time for you. There is support available for you while you wait:

  • Call our CAMHS Consultation Line on 0800 170 7055 (choose option 1, then option 1) or use our our CAMHS Live online chat service for support and advice. These services are available from 9am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, for families, parents, carers, guardians and young people
