A closer look at Learning Disability services at NHFT
Learning Disability Week 2026 is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the vital role our Learning Disability services play across NHFT. Every day, colleagues across these teams provide specialist, compassionate support that helps people live safer, more independent and fulfilling lives.
In the UK there are 1.5 million people with a learning disability (MenCap), and our Learning Disabilities teams work to support those in this figure who live in Northamptonshire.
This week, we are shining a light on just some of the teams and interventions that make up this important service. While we highlight a number of examples below, it's important to recognise that Learning Disability services are made up of many different disciplines and roles, all working together to provide holistic, person-centred care.
Spotlight on our teams
1 Willow Close
Our adult short breaks service in Northampton provides 24/7, 365-day support for people with learning disabilities and complex health needs. The team works closely with individuals, families and carers to provide tailored, holistic care, offering reassurance and vital respite for support networks.
Children's CTPLD
The Children's Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities supports children and young people up to 18, as well as their families and carers. The team provides specialist input across a wide range of areas including behaviour, anxiety, sleep, trauma and relationships, helping families feel supported and better equipped.
Managing Emotions group
Delivered within CTPLD, this group supports individuals to better understand and manage their emotions. Through accessible, structured sessions, people are supported to build confidence and develop coping strategies that make a real difference in everyday life.
Occupational Therapy
Our Occupational Therapy teams support people to build independence through practical, everyday skills such as cooking, routines and daily living. This work enables people to feel more confident and in control of their lives.
Keeping Myself Safe intervention
This group supports people to understand personal safety, boundaries and decision-making. Through structured sessions and tailored support, individuals gain knowledge and confidence to keep themselves safe.
Nursing
Our Learning Disability nurses provide highly specialist support to help people access care in ways that feel safe and manageable. This includes innovative approaches such as desensitisation work, where tools like 3D printed needles, visual aids and tailored resources are used to reduce anxiety around procedures. By taking the time to understand each individual and adapt care to their needs, nursing teams play a key role in improving experiences and outcomes.
