NHFT shortlisted in HSJ Patient Safety Awards

NHFT's Intermediate Care Team have been shortlisted as a finalist at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2025, in recognition of its outstanding commitment to improving patient safety and driving innovation in healthcare.

The award submission, titled Innovation and collaboration with the Northamptonshire Intermediate Care Team was entered in the Deteriorating Patients and Rapid Response Initiative of the Year . The entry focuses on innovation and partnership working across the local healthcare system and how this enables the team to deliver the best outcomes for patients.

Some of the initiatives highlighted in the award submission included:

·       The trialling point of care (POC) portable blood testing kits which allow nurses to take blood from a patient and process it, within the patient's home. This provides an immediate result, enabling a rapid decision on the next course of action.

·       Ensuring that lifting equipment is available in more community bases, ensuring timely access to the equipment, increasing the 2-hour response to patients, and minimising the risk of patient deterioration.

·       Silver Trauma Training , specialising in care for over 65s for our band 7 nurses. They have also received specialist training on treating cuts, wounds and using steri-strips. These innovations mean patients, especially fallers, can be treated and supported to recover in their own homes.

NHFT already works collaboratively with partners across the system and the ability to rapidly respond to patients, to innovate and adapt to increasing demand, means that teams can continue to deliver outstanding care to patients, help to prevent admission to hospital and support discharge from hospital.

Organised by the Health Service Journal (HSJ), the Patient Safety Awards celebrate the teams and individuals going above and beyond to protect patients from harm, reduce risks, and embed a culture of safety across the UK healthcare sector. Winners will be announced on 15 September 2025, after a thorough judging process for all of those shortlisted.

James Nicholson, Deputy Director of Adult Community Services said: 'Being shortlisted as a finalist in the Patient Safety awards is a credit to our dedicated and hard-working Intermediate Care Team. We strive to make a difference together with our patients and their families every day by delivering innovative and outstanding patient care and we're delighted to receive this recognition.'
