Could you spot the signs of Mouth Cancer?
This November, Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) is proud to support Mouth Cancer Action Month, a national campaign led by the Mouth Cancer Foundation and the Oral Health Foundation .
We're helping to raise awareness of mouth cancer, encourage early detection, and support those affected - and we're encouraging our communities to get involved.
Mouth cancer is one of the few cancers that's on the rise. Yet awareness remains low, and many cases are diagnosed too late. Early detection can significantly improve outcomes and that starts with knowing the signs and taking action.
What you need to know:
- Mouth cancer can affect anyone - risk factors include tobacco, alcohol, and HPV.
- Early detection saves lives - persistent ulcers lasting longer than 3 weeks, lumps, or red/white patches in the mouth should never be ignored.
- Self-checks are simple and effective - they take just two minutes and could make all the difference.
- Support is available - the Mouth Cancer Foundation offers resources for patients, carers, and families.
How you can get involved:
· Try a self-check. Follow the step-by-step guide from the Mouth Cancer Foundation and encourage others to do the same.
· Join the 'Mouth Matters' webinar. On Monday 17 November at 6pm, the Mouth Cancer Foundation is hosting a free live session open to everyone. Learn more, hear from experts, and ask questions.
· Share the message. Talk to friends, family, or your community group about the signs and risks of mouth cancer. Awareness saves lives.
· Find support near you. Whether you're living with mouth cancer or supporting someone who is, help is available. Visit the Mouth Cancer Foundation to find a support group near you.
