Type
Adult Inpatients AcuteInpatient care allows us to closely monitor our patients and ensure that they have everything they need for their mental and physical wellbeing.
Sandpiper Ward is an all-female admission and recovery ward with 16 beds. It may take transfers from Kingfisher Ward or Shearwater Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
Sandpiper Ward staff complete a 72-hour assessment with service users who are admitted to the unit. This will include talking with the service user about their care and assessments. Co-producing care with the service user is central to their recovery journey. The occupational therapy service will also actively work with all service users in group sessions and/or individually, depending on their individual recovery needs.
After the 72-hour assessment a decision will be made about how best to support the service user on their recovery journey. This could be by discharging them back to the care of their GP, discharging them with support from the Urgent Care and Assessment Team (UCAT) and/or the Community Mental Health Team, or transferring them to Kingfisher Ward (also part of the Welland Centre).
A service user may be referred for short-term inpatient psychology or for a psychological assessment while they are on Sandpiper Ward. The ward also has links with the short-term team. They may complete a referral for the service user if they have other issues to deal with like accommodation or benefit issues.
The focus of Sandpiper Ward is to work with the service user so they are actively involved in their own care and their planning towards discharge. Regular assessments will be made of the service user's mental state and risk levels.

Smoking and vaping information
We know that quitting smoking reduces your chances of heart disease and lung cancer, as well as improving your sense of taste, making your skin look younger and reducing stress.
Please remember that smoking or vaping is not allowed anywhere on any NHFT sites for outpatients, visitors or staff.
For adult and older adult inpatients only, smoking or vaping is permitted in specially designated areas (ward gardens). If you are an inpatient, please speak to your ward matron about smoking and vaping options. Tobacco dependency advisors are available to support you to quit smoking or vaping, and we also offer nicotine replacement therapy.
All other service users, visitors and staff must go offsite if they wish to smoke or vape.
