Serenity Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) – a safe place for anyone affected by sexual violence

*Content warning: This article contains information about sexual violence and assault, which some readers may find distressing. Please take care when reading and seek support if needed.

As we mark #16DaysofActivism, we stand with survivors and raise awareness of the SARCs that are here to support them. In the UK, one in 30 women were victims of rape or sexual assault in the past year (ONS) , no one should face this alone.

If you've experienced sexual violence or abuse, finding the right support might feel scary and overwhelming. Serenity SARC is here to provide a safe, confidential space where you can access the help you need - whether you choose to report to the police or not.

You do not need to report to the police to access our services. Whatever your circumstances, we are here for you.

What is Serenity?

Serenity is a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) based in Northamptonshire. It offers specialist support to anyone affected by sexual violence or abuse. Our team understands how difficult it can be to take the first step, and we are here to make sure you feel safe, respected, and in control throughout your journey.

Who can access Serenity?

Serenity is for everyone. Whether you are male or female, LGBTQIA+, or from any cultural or ethnic background, you are welcome here. We know that some people may feel services like ours aren't meant for them - but we want you to know that everyone belong s at Serenity.

Support for Children and Young People

Serenity also supports children and young people under 18 who have experienced rape or sexual assault in the East Midlands. This includes an initial medical examination, follow-up care, and therapeutic support. We work alongside Child Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (CHISVAs), who provide emotional and practical support throughout the police reporting process.

The East Midlands Children and Young People's Sexual Assault Service (EMCYPSAS) operates via a single point of access: 0800 183 0023. This helpline is available 24/7 for referrals from professionals or for victims who need directing to the service.

What support is available?

If you have been raped or sexually assaulted, Serenity will offer you , and your family , practical help and emotional support. This includes guidance on what you want to do next and support in making those decisions. We can provide information for as long as you need it and, if helpful, refer or signpost you to other organisations that can support you.

Here's what we can offer:

  • Contacting you
We will contact and support you in the way you prefer - by telephone, email, virtual meeting, text, or face-to-face. This can be at Serenity or at a location you feel most comfortable in.

  • Forensic medical examination
This examination looks after your health needs following an assault and, if you choose, can collect forensic samples for a police investigation. If you are not ready to report, samples can be stored in case you decide to do so later. All examinations are carried out by doctors trained in this specialist field.

  • Emergency contraception
Our doctors can provide emergency contraception (the morning-after pill) within 72 hours of the assault and alternative medication for up to five days after. They will also discuss all other options available to you.

  • Pregnancy testing
If you think you may be pregnant because of an assault, we can offer pregnancy testing.

  • Advice and screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
The risk of some infections can be reduced if medication is given quickly. Our doctors will assess your risk, discuss options, and start treatment if needed, referring you to a sexual health clinic for follow-up.

  • Police involvement
If you report the assault to the police, we will support you and work with them to keep you informed. We will never share information without your consent.

  • Self- referring clients
If you choose not to involve the police, you will still receive the same level of care and support. You can also provide information anonymously if you wish, which may help identify patterns of offending - but this is entirely your decision.

  • Support for partners, family, and friends
We understand this can be a difficult time for those close to you, and Serenity offers help and support for them too.
