International Day of Persons with Disabilities

NHFT is proud to be supporting this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, taking place on Thursday 3 December.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an annual celebration to raise awareness of disabilities, and how people can provide support and understanding to anyone with a disability.

This year’s theme is ‘not all disabilities are visible’, and focuses on increasing understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent, such as mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions.

NHFT is dedicated to being an inclusive healthcare provider and employer and is a committed Purple Space member, an organisation which seeks to build disability confidence from the inside out. Through this we pledge to improve disability awareness, by training for colleagues and managers, and making adjustments to meet the needs of our communities.

Chris Oakes, Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development at NHFT, said: “International Day of Persons with Disabilities provides us with an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that we continue to improve disability awareness both internally for our colleagues and through our service delivery to continue to meet the needs of our patients, service users and carers.

“We remain dedicated to ensuring that we are an inclusive employer and healthcare provider, by making a difference for you, with you.”

According to the World Health Organisation World Report on Disability, 15 per cent of the world’s population, or more than 1 billion people, are living with disability. Of this number, it’s estimated 450 million are living with a mental or neurological condition. Click here to find out more about International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
