NHFT participation user inspired to support a career in medicine

Celebrating NHFT participation workers

Amber Wickremasinghe, an A-level student at Northampton School for Boys, spent the day with team NHFT’s Dr Proscovia Kabanda at the outpatient paediatric clinic in Sudborough House to  learn about the care she provides to children and their parents who may have concerns regarding their child and about the child’s health, development and family history.

Our participation team work with young people who receive care within our children’s services, and their parents or carers, as part of the participation programme to help improve the experiences of patients and ensure patients voices are heard at all times within the Trust.

In February this year Amber joined our participation team to assist in making service development changes as part of the Children’s Patient Experience Group (PEG) and gain knowledge and experience of NHS provision to support her long term ambition  to enrol at university to study medicine.

Amber worked with 0-19 Participation Worker Louise McNulty to arrange for Amber to spend a morning shadowing Dr Kabanda’s clinic. Amber said: “I had an amazing opportunity to spend the day at Sudborough house with Louise and Dr Kabanda.

“Dr Kabanda began by telling me about the children she worked with and their conditions and explained to me the patterns of the Autistic spectrum and how every child is different. During the course of the day Dr Kabanda taught me so much. Watching her carry out her work was truly wonderful further inspiring me to become a doctor one day.

“The studies and theories in which she spoke about relating to the different patients we saw was fascinating and the way she treated the patients and their parents taking her time to explain their child’s condition made me realise the many skills a doctor uses to carry out their work. My day gave me an insight as life as Doctor and the knowledge to help me write my personal statement for preparing for University.”

Angela Hillery, Chief Executive at NHFT, said: “We are committed to delivering outstanding and compassionate care for our service users. By working with our participation team, we can continue to develop and enhance our services, taking into account their experiences and suggestions.

“It is great to hear that Amber has enjoyed her time with the Trust as part of the participation team and was able to gain further experience by shadowing Dr Kabanda. We would like to wish to her all the very best for the future.”
