UNICEF accreditation for NHS Health Visiting Service
Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) Health Visiting Service are delighted to announce they have been awarded Stage 2 UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation.
NHFT are committed to baby friendly services and regularly provide drop-in sessions for mum’s across the county.
Stage 2 accreditation is awarded when a service demonstrates that all staff have been educated according to their role and that this training has prepared staff to care for mothers and families effectively.
Diana Mair, Infant feeding lead for Health Visiting, NHFT welcomes the Trust’s award of accreditation to Stage 2 UNICEF Baby Friendly and said: “Being awarded accreditation status for Stage 2 Baby Friendly is fantastic news for the Trust, it is a globally recognised award and will help to further strengthen our relationships with other stakeholders in the county and beyond. The Baby Friendly initiative indicates we are committed to providing support which is best for the mum’s need and her baby. All of our premises in the county are also breastfeeding welcome.
“Stage 2 is just part of our journey with UNICEF Baby Friendly and we will be ultimately working towards full accreditation in 2017. This a very exciting time for us and I am proud to be part of the journey.”
The Baby Friendly initiative is a worldwide programme of the World Health Organisation and UNICEF. It was established in 1992 to encourage maternity hospitals to implement the ten steps to successful breastfeeding and have subsequently been extended to include community healthcare services and university programmes for midwifery and health visiting/public health nursing. It is a three stage assessment process taking 2/3 years to complete.
