Agreement reached to support continuity of specialist inpatient care in Northampton
An agreement has been reached for inpatients currently under the care of St Andrew's Healthcare in Northampton to transfer to the care of Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) from mid-September 2026, subject to final commercial arrangements.
The agreement includes medium and low secure care, the national D/deaf service and acquired brain injury services, alongside care for a number of other patients where this is needed to support safe continuity of care. Patients will remain on the Northampton site, with services expected to be delivered from William Wake House and Fitzroy House in the longer term.
Alongside NHS England, the organisations are working closely together to ensure the transition is carefully managed, with patient care, safety, continuity and staff wellbeing remaining the shared priority.
As part of the change, some buildings at St Andrew's Healthcare site in Northampton will be leased to NHFT to ensure continuity of specialist impatient care.
"With patient care and patient safety our top priority, we are pleased to announce this important agreement", said Trevor Torrington, CEO of St Andrew's Healthcare.
"We have been working hard with colleagues from NHFT and NHS England to ensure this achieves the best outcomes for our patients. The change will also mean that a large number of specialist healthcare roles are expected to remain in Northampton, as key St Andrew's employees are transferred to the Trust."
Angela Hillery, Chief Executive of Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We recognise the importance of these highly specialist services and the responsibility that comes with this agreement.
"Our focus will be on working in partnership with St Andrew's Healthcare, NHS England, commissioners, patients, carers and colleagues to support a safe and well-managed transition. We are committed to listening, learning and providing compassionate, high-quality care for the people who will come under NHFT's care."
The organisations will continue to work together over the coming weeks to support service users, patients, carers and staff, share further information as plans are confirmed, and ensure the transition is managed with care, compassion and respect.
Together, the focus is on maintaining specialist care in Northampton and building a stable, positive future for the people who rely on these services.
