Experiencing sexual violence can feel overwhelming and isolating. At Serenity, our Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), one of the most important roles in supporting survivors is the Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA). We spoke with Gillian O'Leary, one of our ISVAs, to learn more about what they do and how they help.

What is an ISVA?

An ISVA is a trained professional who provides confidential, non-judgemental support to anyone affected by sexual violence, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, or background. Gillian explains:

My role is to talk to people about what they're experiencing and support them through their journey. If they choose to report to the police, I can support them through the criminal justice process as well.

Who can access ISVA support?

Anyone. ISVAs work with people from all walks of life, including men, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those from different cultural or religious backgrounds. You do not need to report to the police to access ISVA support.

You don't have to report to the police to get our services, and that's very important for people to know.

What does an ISVA do?

ISVAs provide practical and emotional support tailored to your needs. This includes:

  • Listening and emotional support in a safe, confidential space.
  • Explaining options - whether you want to report to the police or not.
  • Guidance through the criminal justice process if you choose to report.
  • Help with Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) claims.
  • Signposting to other services for additional support.

We are a point of contact throughout their journey, whatever that journey might be. Everybody is unique.

Working alongside CISVAs

For children and young people, Serenity also works with Child Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (CISVAs). CISVAs provide emotional and practical support for under-18s and their families, ensuring they feel safe and supported throughout any police reporting process.
