On 30 May 2025, HMP Peterborough hosted a visit from a delegation of NHS England policy makers and commissioners. The visit was requested by and on behalf of Chris Hopson, NHS England's Director of Strategy, and aimed to gather insights to inform future commissioning of healthcare services in secure environments.
The delegation, which included national leaders such as Kate Davies CBE, National Director for Health and Justice, spent the day engaging with NHFT Secured Services team , prison leadership, and residents. The focus was on understanding the unique challenges and successes of delivering healthcare in a remand and women's prison setting.
Feedback from the visiting group noted the strength of partnership working across the site and highlighted the clear sense of collaboration, with patients and residents placed firmly at the centre of care. The group also described a culture of can-do and care that was evident throughout the day.
The importance of mental health support and staff wellbeing was also recognised, with the delegation praising the proactive steps being taken to enhance services and support both residents and staff.
Dionne Mayhew, Interim Director of People at NHFT, who attended the visit, reflected:
"The visit provided a positive overview of the progress being made at HMP Peterborough. It was encouraging to see the recognition of improvements and the strong collaborative working between all teams."
The visit also included a focus group with four female residents, whose honest and thoughtful contributions were greatly valued . The feedback gathered will help shape future service developments to ensure that care continues to meet the needs of those in custody.
This visit stands as a testament to the dedication, professionalism, and compassion of NHFT teams working across our Secured Services . It also reinforces the value of national engagement in supporting continuous improvement and innovation in healthcare delivery.
