Mental Health Wards Receive National Accreditation

Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) is delighted to share the news that all adult inpatient wards at Berrywood Hospital have now been awarded the Acute Inpatient Mental Health Services (AIMS) accreditation for dedication to providing high quality patient care. This accreditation recognises the achievements of all staff at Berrywood Hospital, as well as reassuring patients and service users of the high standards of the organisation. In addition, the Wheatfield Unit at Berrywood Hospital has successfully been accepted to the Quality Network for Forensic Mental Health Services (QNFMHS).

AIMS is a partnership between the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the British Psychological Society, the College of Occupational Therapists and the Royal College of Nursing. The accreditation scheme was successfully introduced in June 2006 to identify and acknowledge wards that have high standards of organisation and patient care, and that comply with national policies and guidelines. Experts from across acute in-patient wards and services are directly involved in providing advice and the ongoing review and development of the standards. All of the working-age adult inpatient wards at Berrywood Hospital have now achieved this accreditation.

QNFMHS is a quality improvement network for low and medium secure inpatient forensic mental health services in the UK. This network adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to quality improvement in medium and low secure mental health services. A key component of the work is the sharing of best practice by listening to and being led by frontline staff and patients.

Andres Patino, Head of Adult Mental Health Services in the south of the county, said: “AIMS and QNFMHS accreditation from the Royal College of Psychiatrists is a tremendous achievement for all of the adult wards at Berrywood Hospital. We know that all of our Ward Matrons, Ward Teams and Ward Champions worked so hard to both prepare for the inspection teams and to host them as well. Congratulations to all at Berrywood for getting the external recognition that you very much deserve.”

Harbour Ward, Bay Ward and Cove Ward have all achieved accreditation for Inpatient Mental Health Services - Working Age Adult. The Marina Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit has achieved accreditation for Inpatient Mental Health Services - Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, and the Meadowbank Unit has achieved accreditation for Inpatient Mental Health Services Rehabilitation. The Wheatfield Unit has been accepted to the Quality Network for Forensic Mental Health Services (QNFMHS).

Berrywood Hospital is a modern, purpose-built facility that helps individuals rebuild their lives in a safe and caring environment. The hospital provides state-of-the-art facilities for inpatient mental health services for adults and older people, an assessment and treatment unit for people with learning disabilities and a low secure unit.
