International Men’s Day: reflections from 10 Downing Street

International Men's Day, marked on 19 November, is a chance to shine a light on issues affecting men and to celebrate the positive qualities of masculinity .

This year, Dr. Sunil Lad, National Clinical Director for Health and Justice at NHS England and Consultant Counselling Psychologist for Specialist and Secured Services at NHFT, was invited to a reception at 10 Downing Street to mark the occasion.

During the event, the Prime Minister , Sir Kier Starmer, spoke about the need for more positive role models for men, warning that if we don't champion healthy examples of masculinity, others will step forward with harmful narratives.

Reflecting on this message, Dr. Lad said:

"There are specific issues that affect men that need to be addressed for us to live in a healthier society. The spotlight is often on harms done by men and themes linked to 'toxic masculinity ', but there are other issues that need awareness if we are to build healthy role models and address challenges like violence against women and girls."

For Dr. Lad, International Men's Day is about encouraging helpful aspects of masculinity and creating positive role models:

"Working predominantly with men in my career, I've seen the effects of bottling up emotions - leading to substance use, neglecting health, and sometimes harm towards others. Listening to how we feel, connecting, and collaborating helps us flourish as humans, which benefits everyone."

He believes NHS organisations have an important role to play:

"We need to think creatively and work with men to understand barriers that stop them asking for help, whether for mental or physical health. Breaking those barriers and providing accessible messages can empower men to improve their health and support others."

International Men's Day reminds us of the need for compassion and care , and the importance of challenging harmful norms. Together, we can create spaces where men feel supported and thrive.
