Type
Adult Inpatients AcuteHarbour Ward is a mixed sex admission and recovery ward with 17 beds at Berrywood Hospital in Northampton.
All our wards provide a modern, needs-led, trauma-informed acute mental health service where we aim to treat service users with dignity and respect in an environment that is appropriate, safe and supportive for service users, staff and visitors.
Through a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency approach, we provide a range of services that are suitable for people's individual needs. Staff work together with service users in a non-discriminatory way that accepts and is framed around the service user's understanding of their own issues. This involves recognising the service user's culture, life experience, protected characteristics and strengths to support their recovery.
Each service user will take part in a multi-disciplinary team assessment of their needs and safety which will inform their treatment and care during their admission.

Smoking and vaping information
We know that quitting smoking reduces your chances of heart disease and lung cancer, as well as improving your sense of taste, making your skin look younger and reducing stress.
Please remember that smoking or vaping is not allowed anywhere on any NHFT sites for outpatients, visitors or staff.
For adult and older adult inpatients only, smoking or vaping is allowed in specially designated areas (ward gardens). If you are an inpatient, please speak to your Ward Matron about smoking and vaping options. Tobacco dependency advisors are available to support you to quit smoking or vaping, and we also offer nicotine replacement therapy.
All other service users, visitors and staff must go offsite if they wish to smoke or vape.

Introducing Martha's Rule
We are pleased to be introducing Martha's Law, also known as Martha's Rule, as part of the national phase 2 NHS pilot programme on Harbour ward. This patient safety initiative is designed to support the early recognition and escalation of physical health deterioration, particularly where concerns may not yet be reflected in routine clinical observations.
Martha's Rule gives patients, families, carers, and staff a clear and consistent way to request a clinical review if they are worried that a patient's physical health is worsening and feel that their concerns have not been adequately addressed.
Patients and those close to them often notice subtle changes before these are captured by clinical measurements. These may include changes in:
- Behaviour or responsiveness
- Pain, breathing, or mobility
- Colour, temperature, or general something not quite right concerns
Raising these concerns early can support faster assessment and intervention, improving patient safety and experience.
You know yourself and the people you care for better than anyone. You may notice small changes before the healthcare team does. These changes could be early warning signs of deterioration.
- Tell us when a change worries you
- Speak to the team looking after your loved one
- If you are still worried and feel that the healthcare team is not dealing with your concerns, call 03000 271 717 between 8am and 19.30pm
- What happens next? Your concerns will be listened to and referred to either a senior clinician or senior manager
Our commitment
We are committed to working in partnership with patients, families, and carers. Feedback will be actively sought throughout the pilot, and all concerns will be heard. Martha's Rule reinforces our shared responsibility to listen, respond, and act early to keep patients safe.
