Admiral Nurses take dementia support out into the community

It's estimated that 1 in 2 of us in the UK will either care for someone with dementia or need dementia care ourselves. Caring for someone with dementia can be rewarding but it can also be overwhelming, exhausting and, at times, isolating.

NHFT's Admiral Nursing Service is here to support families affected by dementia every step of the way. It is a specialist dementia service staffed by highly trained nurses who provide expert clinical advice, emotional support and practical guidance - helping people to feel more confident and less alone.

Carers often carry a huge emotional, physical and psychological burden. Without the right support, they can become overwhelmed."

To meet the different needs of as many carers as possible, whoever they are and wherever they live in the county, NHFT's Admiral Nurses offer a range of support, from informal advice to structured programmes. This enables people to access help in a way that suits them.

For those who may not know where to start, dementia drop-in sessions are held in easily accessible locations around Northamptonshire. They offer a simple and welcoming way to access support. There is no need for a referral to attend a drop-in session and no expectation of being in crisis. Each session is shaped around what carers need in that moment, from practical guidance to emotional support and signposting to other services.

At one recent drop-in held in Corby, Admiral Nurses Natalie (pictured top right) and Corinne (top left) offered advice and information to carers about supporting people with dementia.

For carers who would benefit from more in-depth support, the 6-week Carers Sanctuary programme is offered.

"No family should have to face dementia alone", Sophie adds. "We're here to make sure that you don't."
