d/Deaf medium secure inpatients

Our specialist medium secure service for d/Deaf men aged 18 to 65 with complex mental illness is a 15-bed ward in a purpose-built environment.

We use the term 'd/Deaf' to refer both to people who are Deaf (belonging to the Deaf Culture community and use British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language), and people who are deaf (have acquired hearing loss later in life and so are familiar with spoken language).

Our service accepts patients with a wide range of diagnoses, including mental illness, personality disorder, learning disability, brain injury, autism spectrum disorder, or a combination of these. They may have a history of offending and of behaviour considered too high risk for them to be cared for in open units.

Many of the nurses in our team are d/Deaf and all staff and patients are trained in BSL. This helps us to ensure the ward is a culturally sensitive environment that supports patients to engage with staff, each other and with their therapy.

Treatment and care is centred around the needs of each individual and includes assessment (including communication assessment), treatment and rehabilitation. We work with patients to develop a tailored treatment plan to help them to build relationships, aid their recovery and create a sense of belonging.

Who is this service for? Men aged between 18 to 65 with a complex mental illness who are d/Deaf or hearing impaired and meet the criteria for medium secure care.
