Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) is thrilled to share the news that they have been shortlisted in four categories at this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards which recognise safety, culture and positive experience in patient care, celebrating its worthy finalists on a national scale.

NHFT have been shortlisted for four awards in total across three categories as follows:

Patient Involvement in Safety Award – two shortlists
Co-production with the Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) team

Suicide Prevention at NHFT

Developing a Positive Safety Culture Award
Creating a culture where patient safety is everyone's business

Staff Wellbeing Initiative of the Year
Embracing neurodiversity in supporting employee wellbeing

A strong theme running through all four entries was that of “co-production”. This is where patients, service users and carers work alongside clinicians to co-design training programmes, initiatives or even new services, based on their feedback and experiences of those with lived experience.

For example, the Trust’s suicide prevention training programme is co-produced by NHFT’s Suicide Prevention lead, alongside an active Involvee with lived experience of being at risk of suicide. By bringing together professionals and those with actual lived experiences, the Trust is able to develop services and design initiatives with evidence-based backing, with the voice of the patient, service user and carer at the forefront of the design.

On hearing the news, David Maher, Managing Director of NHFT said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for four awards in this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards. It is testament to the hard work and dedication of our people who work so hard every day to make a difference to those we care for, and it provides a welcome boost for our teams.

“As a Trust, we started our co-production journey around ten years ago, and it is now well embedded in our organisational culture, with service users, involvees and carers all regularly involved in the design of new services and initiatives. By listening to the experiences of those who have used our services, we can work together to improve services, deliver better patient and carer experiences and to design new services which in response to the growing needs of our population.

“We are also delighted to be recognised in the new staff wellbeing initiative award this year. It is vitally important that we continue to support our team, so they can then support our service users. We look forward to the final announcement in September.”

A record-breaking 515 entries were received for the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2023, with 209 organisations, projects and individuals making it to the final shortlist. The high volume and exceptional quality of applications once again reflected the dedication and commitment to patient care within the UK’s healthcare networks.

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan, adds; “As always, it’s a pleasure at this stage of our lengthy judging process, to be able to offer my congratulations to Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, as the shortlisted finalists are revealed for this years’ HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

“Every one of the projects, Trusts, teams and individuals who entered this year have truly demonstrated their skills in setting – and delivering – the highest of standards in healthcare excellence, presenting our venerable panel of judges with some difficult decisions.
