NHFT celebrates the role of service users and carers as part of co-production week

The benefits of coproduction

Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) is celebrating the role service users have in developing its services as part of ‘Co-production week’.

NHFT provides over 100 NHS services including mental health and community services across the county. These vital services provide outstanding and compassionate care for people of all ages, and NHFT is continually developing and improving the care it provides. Just one of the many ways this is achieved is through co-production.

Co-production week, which takes place from 5 – 11 July, is celebrating its sixth year. This annual awareness week aims to showcase the benefits of co-production, share best practice and promote the contribution of services users in continually developing public services.

Anne Rackham, Director of Mental Health at NHFT and Andy Willis, co-chair the Adult Mental Health Patient Engagement Group in Northamptonshire. They have discussed the importance of coproduction of mental health services during COVID-19:

Dora is a service user, and she has supported co-production workshops at NHFT, which are formed of staff, service users and carers who come together to listen and respond to lived experiences. As a carer, Dora’s experience has been invaluable to promoting discussions and implementing positive changes across the Trust.  This includes redefining ward rules, giving service users the knowledge that their feedback is heard.

“As with service users, the lived experiences of carers enable them to contribute in so many areas of the Trust’s services. know I am valued and have always been treated as an equal by the Medical Professionals and service users alike. When changes are made it gives you a sense of pride. For anyone wanting to give a little back to their community I highly recommend it.

Services developed through co-production include crisis cafes, which provide urgent mental health support in a relaxed environment and the mental health number (0800 448 0828), offering 24 hour mental health support, seven days a week.
