NHFT consultant's work shared in international publication

Prof Ian Wall in Sydney

An NHFT consultant's insight into forensic physicians, and how they're qualified to do the important work they do, has gained international recognition in a top publication.

Professor Ian Wall, Consultant Forensic Physician Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (pictured) based at Serenity Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) has had a chapter published in the prestigious Encyclopedia of Forensic and Legal Medicine.

A forensic physician is a medical professional who examines and evaluates people involved in legal cases or criminal investigations. They are tasked with examining victims, suspects, or others, and provide expert medical opinions and evidence.

Ian's chapter focuses on the historical aspects of the accreditation of forensic physicians in the UK, progress toward standard setting, and expected progress in the future.

Ian said: "The book chapter is about standards in clinical forensic medicine, training, relevant examinations and quality standards. It also encompasses Service Level Standards one of which is that the contracted workforce should have a minimum of 25 per cent of forensic physicians who have passed the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine membership examination (MFFLM). We are particularly proud that at Serenity, 50 per cent of forensic physicians have MFFLM."

Previously, Ian has published other book chapters on a range of subjects including fitness for detention and interview, injury interpretation and drink and drug driving.
