What is spirituality?

What is spirituality?

The Royal College of Psychiatrists offer further insight into Spiritual Wellbeing and how it can support recovery, see below a definition of spirituality from their website:

Spirituality doesn’t have one definition and can mean many different things for everyone. We understand that spirituality is personal and unique to everyone. These are a few examples of what spirituality could include:

  • Finding meaning and purpose
  • Values such as honesty, kindness and compassion
  • Having hope
  • Discovering resilience and strength
  • Developing trust
  • A sense of connectedness with ourselves, others, the natural world and perhaps what lies beyond
  • Having a belief in self, others and for some, in a higher being
  • Religious practices
  • A sense of belonging
  • Meditation  / mindfulness / prayer / contemplation
  • Creativity and self-expression
